Recently we hosted 21 senior government officials from Burkina Faso, Mali, Zambia and Sierra Leone who were representing various government departments that support the mining industry in their countries. They were visiting Australia on a Mining Governance Study Tour organised by the Australian Africa Alliance.

We had the opportunity of explaining our role in assisting mining companies to understand the compliance issues of the mining codes in the areas they are mining and to raise their awareness of issues which may affect those attracting mining companies to invest in Africa. It was a very rewarding experience and one which will hopefully build a level of trust and bring about a greater understanding of their mining codes and transparency which could help to secure tenure for our clients.

We also hosted an Australian barbeque for our guests who took particular delight in tasting kangaroo for the first time. It is the African way to welcome you to their home so it was lovely to have the opportunity to host them at our home. The Department of Mines and Petroleum in Western Australia has been the first organisation to implement the latest version in update of its Mineral Exploration Reporting Template software known as MRT. In addition, the MRT update provides enhanced functionality, as requested by users of the software.

It is a statutory requirement that exploration data be submitted in a particular format specified by each state or territory. These guidelines facilitate a shift to standardising mineral exploration data reporting across Australia.

The primary purpose of standardising the data is to improve speed and accuracy of merging data submitted by exploration companies. Subsequent benefits for exploration companies include:

being able to export data in the same basic format for any State in Australia;

having a clear understanding of how data is to be submitted, reducing the necessity to re-submit data;

having the necessary information available when working with open-file data, such as grid coordinate systems, assay units and assay detection limits; and

possible future access to statewide databases for geochemical data, saving precious time in having to collate numerous datasets formatted in different ways.

The new template is available for download from the Department of Mines and Petroleum’s Data and Software Centre at http://www.dmp.wa.gov.au/4895.aspx.
Further information about the national guidelines can be obtained from the Geoscience Australia’s “Geoscience Portal” at http://www.geoscience.gov.au/exploration.jsp.
Geoscience Australia is expected to update its templates to Version 4 in the near future.

GET MINING INDIGENOUS TRAINING PROGRAM

Participants in the Get Mining Indigenous Training Program

In February 2012 we will be facilitating the training of 20 indigenous people to start work for 10 Mining Companies in the Goldfields. This is an 8 week program run by MTACS which gives participants a Certificate III in Surface Extraction Operations. This program is also being offered to the Mid West area with a course commencing in April from Mt Magnet.

Many Native Title Agreements contain an employment and training clause which some companies have difficulties adhering to due to their size. Working collaborately with a number of mining companies in the goldfields has allowed us to deliver a recognised training program with proven results for 20 trainees. The training program enables indigenous people to get entry level skills that enable them to work safely in the mining industry. They will learn how to operate basic equipment, work 12 hour shifts, manage their personal finances and communicate and understand regulations required to operate efficiently in the mining industry.

This course has been approved by many native title groups who are keen to have their people participate and fulfilling obligations to these groups will bring about harmonious relationships which will benefit those organisations who participate in the long term.

The mining companies involved enjoy the benefits of meeting some of their native title requirements and getting workers who live near their mining operations and frankly a good story to tell about their corporate social responsibility.
